Never fear, each Saturday our Weekly Roundup will show you a little glimpse of the week’s highlights, our most popular posts, new releases, column updates and anything that has provoked a response from internet trolls on up to insightful feedback and discussion.
THEATRICAL RELEASESThe big release this week is the hilarious Neighbors. While not as riotous as This Is the End, it’s a damn solid effort to start the summer comedy season. A scene involving a “Robert De Niro party” in particular cracked me up; see my review here. After something a little more subdued? Michael shares his thoughts on Chef, which also garnered quite favorable reviews after its SXSW premiere. We also have The Double in a limited theatrical release, and I’m really looking forward to that one.
HOME VIDEO RELEASESNew this week on Blu-ray is the crime caper The Art of the Steal, which brings Kurt Russell back to our screens. Twilight Time have their special release of the Lynch/Cage collaboration Wild at Heart, which is always a treat. Finally we have the Seven Samurai remake the Seven Warriors, and also the creepiness that is Mr Jones. A diverse selection was covered by our team, with something for everyone in there.
TV RECAPThis week, I donned my finest tweed jacket, lit my pipe, poured a small sherry and sat down ready to be OUTRAGED by the mockery of my people for the new London-based season of 24. However, Live Another Day did not offend; instead it trod the same formula that has come before. Checkout my musings here and take solace in the fact they only went and ruddy cast Stephen Fry as the Prime Minister, so it could get interesting, right?
Also, Sharon rebounds from her outrage at last week’s Game of Thrones and declares the show to be “back on track” in her weekly recap.
COLUMNSTwo Cents this week tackles The Punk Singer, and we had a HUGE number of submissions for this one. Our Movie of the Week selection is from James Carey and is the straight up awesome Big Trouble In Little China. It’s a great breakdown of the film and how it came to be.
EVENTSOur Editor Ed fell in love with someone this week, and his name is “The Boz,” aka Brian Bosworth. The star of 90s action film Stone Cold attended a special screening in downtown Austin and indulged in a Q&A afterwards which shone light on the making of the picture (including the destruction of government property) as well as the personal side of his life. It was a crowd pleasing and rather touching event by all accounts.
MISCELLANEOUSThe fallout from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 continues and Victor has an editorial here where he eloquently shines light on why people think it’s so fucking terrible. Continuing the theme of “crapping on a movie,” another editorial looks at why the extended cut of Anchorman 2 ruins the original. Finally, I introduce a local TV production in Opening Up the Beer Diaries, which is well worth a look if you have an interest in craft beer.
