Cinapse Weekly Roundup — Fourth Week of October, 2014

CINAPSE Weekly Roundup — October 25th, 2014

Deluged by the plethora of awesome content the Cinapse family provides each week? Worried you missed something? Never fear, each Saturday our Weekly Roundup will show you a little glimpse of the week’s highlights, our most popular posts, new releases, column updates and anything that has provoked a response from internet trolls on up to insightful feedback and discussion.

THEATRICAL RELEASESNew this week, dating/stalking drama/thriller The Heart Machine and a film that initially garnered huge praise on the festival circuit but now seems to be quite divisive, Michael Keaton’s Birdman. We also have a early (well early for the US) review of ’71: The Year of Living Dangerously, which just had its UK release.

The big release and one I heartily recommend after it blew my face off at Fantastic Fest is the brutal, fun action film John Wick. Check out our to reviews from Austin and Ryan. “Gun-Fu” at its best.

HOME VIDEO RELEASESA smattering of horror (as you’d expect) this month with new releases for The Blob and Life After Beth. Fancy something a little classier? Then French biopic Violette may be more your taste. Need some action? We have ya covered with reviews of Korean feature Kundo and Italian cop thriller Stunt Squad.

Two documentaries drop this week. The first is a double bill of Ken Loach’s Riff-raff and Raining Stones. We also take a look at the Boston gangster world in Whitey. Capping it all off, an great release for an exceptional piece of TV, Mad Men: The Final Season Pt. 1 is out now on Blu-ray.

TVDoctor Who this week was the exceptionally well crafted Flatline. Aliens invading from a 2D universe made for some clever scenarios and inventive visuals, another cracker to add to an already impressive season. My recap is here.

PODCASTS
Those Cinepunx boys are back with a special Halloween Podcast, and we also see the return of Riding in Car with Boy(s) and their take on last week’s release, St. Vincent.

COLUMNSPick of the Week continues the spooky October tradition with its selection, Black Sabbath. Similiarly, Two Cents brings the team and guests together for a look at Demons.

EVENTSAustinites were treated to a special screening of The Princess Bride this week, not only as a quote-a-long but with star Cary Elwes in attendence promoting his new book, As You Wish, a look back at the making of this cherished film. Read my recap to see what went down.

We also brought to you coverage of the latest Mondo Gallery show, this one celebrating 75 Years of Batman. Check out the pictures of the prints and (unlike some other outlets) ALL the OG pieces from the show here.

MISCELLANEOUSLiam brings us his latest novel this week in Volume III of his Journal of Fear. The Action/Adventure section is back looking at The Killer Elite. Jacob also brings us a “modest defense” of the 2004 Exorcist Prequel.

Wow John Wick. Such doge puppy, much gun shots, so face loss.
