THE ENDLESS (Watch)

The Endless is a horror/sci-fi mashup from filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Cinapse writer Justin Harlan, loved it:

The Endless is a clinic in how to build convincing and lasting dread that sticks with the viewer long beyond the viewing. With a concept that could easily become campy or contrived if done incorrectly, The Endless tells its story so perfectly than there is never a moment where it even threatens to fall into any category resembling schlock or camp.

THE WITCH (Watch)

Director Robert Eggers’s feature debut blew people away, including our own Alex Williams:

The Witch is a promising start for this intriguing new director, a massively effective horror film with an incredible degree of difficulty that succeeds for its unabashed commitment to its setting and world. Eggers’ effortless command of every aspect of The Witch sets it apart, but the film’s true power emerges in the weeks and months after seeing it, as just the memories of unnerving moments like a crow’s deadly feast or a gravelly whispered question are enough make this viewer have a full-body shudder.

BLACK PANTHER (Watch)

One of the biggest movies of the year, Black Panther exceeded expectations at a time when comic book movies were getting a bit stale. From my review:

Black Panther could be half the movie it is and still make a boatload of money and please the great masses, washed and unwashed alike. Its action sequences from hand-to-hand combat to car chases to armies on the field of battle are as fantastic as one would expect. It’s the story’s forthright exploration of difficult topics that takes it to another level. This time, Marvel definitely got it right.

COCO (Watch)

For a family film, it doesn’t get much better than Coco. Sure, tears might be shed, but it will be well worth it. From the Cinapse review:

Coco is undoubtedly the most detailed and exquisite offering yet from the animators at Pixar. This Land of the Dead is a stunning and vibrant realm. It’s full of colorful characters such as living skeletons, technicolored alebrijes(spirit animals), as well as Pixar’s customary flourish for detail and visual gags, both subtle and slapstick.

GROUNDHOG DAY (Watch)

The Cinapse crew loves this movie, so much so that it was a pick for Two Cents. Jon Partridge had this to say:

It is not often a film shows us a note-perfect scene. Groundhog Day not only contains many such scenes but, thanks to the time-loop aspect, variations on each, with every one magnificent in their own way. A movie that is as close to comedic perfection as you’ll get, whatever day of Phil’s life you see. For a movie that circles around a singular premise and repetition, it is one of the most surprising and fresh comedies of the last few decades.
