There are a few different retailer exclusive versions of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 out this week, and they’re all covered in our weekly Blu-ray release column The COBRA Connection. But the hands-down winner is Best Buy’s 4K+3D Steelbook.
At $34.99 it’s not an inexpensive option, but it is the only way to get both formats in a single package (along with a standard 2D Blu-ray and digital copy). In fact, for the time being, it’s also the only US option to get a 3D disc, period.
Note there is also a standard Blu-ray edition of this Steelbook. While its media contents differ, the design and packaging aspects are very similar.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the design when it was revealed (for a team movie like this, a group shot makes more sense), but it actually looks really slick, with a combination of glossy accents and a nice debossing effect for some dimensionality. It looks a lot better in hand than on paper or screen.
This edition will almost certainly vanish immediately, especially since it’s the lone 3D option. Going by past experience, I’ve never known Marvel’s promotional Steelbooks to be restocked after the initial offering (though owner Disney’s Star Wars retailer exclusives have been in relatively ample supply, so you never know).
Hit the Best Buy link below to check for stock in your area. These numbers aren’t always accurate so there’s a chance you might still score in-store even if no stock is reported. If you’re remotely interested and there’s still a copy near you, grab it immediately.
A/V Out.
