Trailer Round Up: ELYSIUM and ONLY GOD FORGIVES

We aren’t going to be doing a ton of “news” related posts around these parts. We figure there are dozens of movie sites that are all posting the same breaking news and rumors and we love those sites! But we don’t need to be them. That said, I’m a pretty big fan of trailers and official images for upcoming films. I like to see how the movies are being sold, and I like getting glimpses of tone or sweeping visuals, etc.

With something like ELYSIUM or ONLY GOD FORGIVES, I don’t frankly need a trailer at all. I’ll be in theaters opening weekend without question. But any movie that I’ll see blind is a movie that I’m going to be really antsy to see a trailer for just because my geek brain takes over. So I figured I would share a couple of those trailers with you now. And I wouldn’t be surprised if you see trailers and stills popping up here at Cinapse fairly often. This is just some of the stuff I get too excited to leave to the “other” sites.

And so, we finally have a trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s follow up to DISTRICT 9, ELYSIUM. Matt Damon, exo-suits, class warfare, robots, and Jodie Foster. I daresay that nothing else needs to be said. Enjoy!

I really like what I am seeing here. DISTRICT 9 had some of the best entertainment value vs. sci-fi food for thought that I’ve seen in the 2000s. The tone of that film was dead on. If anything, I might be slightly concerned that the class struggle issues here in ELYSIUM might be a little too obvious or on the nose. But I trust Blomkamp and team. The visuals here look akin to the effects found in DISTRICT 9, but this is clearly a much grander tale, told with a larger budget. That isn’t always an inherently good thing, but this trailer is working for me.

Then earlier this week the first trailer for ONLY GOD FORGIVES dropped. This is Nicolas Winding Refn’s second team up with star Ryan Gosling after 2011’s DRIVE (which was the best film of the year in my book.) This go-round, we find Gosling in Thailand, looking to fight. And seemingly having some Oedipal-type stuff going on. This trailer is bold, colorful, and set to an awesome karaoke-style vocal track. There are swords, too. You’ll see.

What do you guys think? Will you be there with me on opening weekend or can either one of these wait for a rental?

And I’m Out.
