Hey Austin-based Cinapsians, if you’re into dad-action movies, then Criminal looks like it was made for you (us, really).
Ever since Liam Neeson utilized his “special set of skills” in Taken, Hollywood has been happily bank-rolling action vehicles for older stars to kick ass in. It’s a bizarre phenomenon, but a welcome one. When my heroes have seen it all and glare through weathered eyes at the villains in their way, they’re carrying a gravitas I appreciate far more than the newest, hottest, hunkiest hero the casting machine tries to foist on us.
With Criminal, we have what looks to be a high concept sci-fi action film (R-rated, even!) along the lines of Face/Off, and it’s just filled with badasses (dad-asses?): Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and even Gary Oldman! The concept seems questionable, but it’s all going to come down to the execution. And speaking of execution, the filmmakers have chosen Cinapse favorite Scott Adkins to be among the already stacked cast list, so count Ed in on this one no matter what!
