With COVID-19 keeping audiences out of theaters for the foreseeable future, film festivals are faced with a tough decision this fall. Do they simply sit the year out? Or do they attempt to forge ahead with a virtual edition? While simply seeing films makes up probably 70 percent of the festival experience, the other 30 percent is the social aspect and what happens in the hallways after and between films. It’s not just watching something unspool for the first time with a group of like minded individuals, it’s that camaraderie and shared experience that’s not something you can easily replicate and put online. The Chattanooga Film Fest, seemingly cracked it with a solid slate of films, combined with an engaging LIVE virtual presence that was able to scratch both itches for festival goers.
That being said, one of the fall’s more prestigious genre showcases, Toronto’s own Fantasia has also decided to make the virtual leap with their 24th edition happening August 20th thru September 2nd. With both world and international feature film premieres combined with filmmaker intros and LIVE audience-involved Q&A’s, panels, and workshops, it looks like Fantasia is definitely trying to curate an experience worthy of the fest. The only downside is its offerings will be geo-locked, what that means is that the fest’s online offerings will only be available to those with Canadian IPs. Think of it much like region coding on a DVD. Like a normal fest, tickets will be sold to these online screenings that will be limited and time locked to further replicate the theatrical experience so everyone is hitting social media all at the same time, which further helps the community building aspects.
With the announcement of their third wave of films hitting today, I thought I would check in with my fellow virtual festival goers here on Cinapse and get a feel for what their most anticipated titles for the fest are.

1. LEGALLY DECLARED DEAD
I will watch any film starring Hong Kong legend Anthony Wong, who started out doing category 3 horror films and worked his way up into more mainstream fare like the Infernal Affair series. This film is a Hong Kong adaptation of The Black House, Yusuke Kishi’s bestselling novel from 1997. I am mentioning his Category 3 work because this film’s story about an insurance broker investigating a suicide that has Wong playing a creepy client that sounds reminiscent of some of his darker works.
2. SPECIAL ACTORS
I was lucky enough to have caught One Cut of the Dead early on in its festival run at NYAFF, before the buzz really started to spread, so the film hit much differently. I still really loved it, but it I didn’t sit down with expectations, but I was indeed floored. So needless to say when I saw the same director is back doing a film about a group of oddball actors, all I can say is count me in!
3. MONSTER SEAFOOD WARS
I’ve been finally working through the Criterion Godzilla box and this from the blurb sounded like an ol’ fashioned Kajiu beat ’em up, and for that I am most definitely in. The premise feels a bit campy, a bunch of sushi themed monsters, but because you have the practical man in suit flavor of Kaiju, nowadays you kinda have to go that route.

Having covered or been involved in the coverage of Fantasia Festival for quite a few years now thanks to Cinapse, I can tell you that I come to Fantasia looking for action cinema. If you know me well, you know that I go EVERYWHERE looking for action cinema. But unlike my beloved Austin-based festivals SXSW and Fantastic Fest (or most any festival I know of), Fantasia actually has a programming focus on the action genre, and I appreciate that deeply. More genre festivals should follow in Fantasia’s lead on this front.
As such, I’m going to focus pretty succinctly on a couple of action-heavy titles I’m anticipating.
Crazy Samurai Musashi: As someone who is in love with samurai cinema, and quite well acquainted with the singular presence of Tak (aka Tak Sakaguchi), as well as an appreciator of the cinematographic phenomenon known as the “oner”… this title is simply hands down my most anticipated film of the festival. I’m not certain that “fighting hundreds of samurais” is the best match for a single take film (that could get pretty sloppy), but I’m excited about the experiment and ready to soak it all in. At the very least Tak Sakaguchi playing Miyamoto Musashi on screen will be a treat. And in the best case scenario this will be unlike anything anyone’s ever seen before.
The Paper Tigers: This action comedy appears to be coming from a first time filmmaker, with a cast of largely unknowns, and the premise is amazing. A bunch of regular, average, modern day martial arts practitioners find themselves in a situation where they must avenge the death of their master. So, like, if Hank Hill all the sudden had to avenge the death of his master, what would that look like? It also appears to have some real chops as an action film from what I can tell from the trailers. This is one of those movies that went from “I’ve never heard of it” to “I can’t live without seeing this film” immediately upon seeing the trailer.

LUCKY and 12 HOUR SHIFT
I won’t apologize for being a Brea Grant fan. She’s a Texas girl who got her start on Friday Night Lights, which is just about perfect. She then went to Heroes, that shining light from NBC that never quite paid off but was still a fun ride. Now she’s represented in this year’s fest in two, TWO movies.
12 Hour Shift, which Grant wrote and directed, is described as a “gripping real-time, hospital-set thriller / black comedy.” Black comedy in a hospital? Sign me up! Austin native Angela Bettis stars as a junkie nurse involved in organ harvesting. It’s going to be a good time.
Grant steps in front of the lens in Natasha Kermani’s Lucky, a stalking film that looks to explore paranoia in a deeply disturbing way. This was set to premier at this year’s SXSW, so it’s definitely better late than never.
SAVAGE STATE
Savage State is a western. A feminist western. A French feminist western. The original title is L’état Sauvage, a tale of a family caught in the American Civil War who must flee back to Paris. Sounds like genre-bending fun. Well, maybe not fun, but adventure anyway.

Time to go venture into the dark, fantastic and unpredictable side of up-and-coming cinema with one of my favorite film fests of the year!
First up is THE OAK ROOM in which Breaking Bad’s R.J. Mitte stars as a young man returning to his Canadian hometown where ghosts from the past threaten to destroy him, in what sounds like a twisty snow-covered thriller.
Next up, CLAPBOARD JUNGLE where up-and-coming filmmaker Justin McConnell documents his 5-year journey of getting his latest project made in the hugely competitive world of independent film with commentary along the way from Guillermo Del Toro and George A. Romero.
Finally, I’ll be looking at FREIES LAND, the new horror/thriller from Germany’s own Christian Alvart, which sees a pair of detectives navigate through a suspicious town full of dark secrets in order to locate a pair of teenagers who have gone missing.

Fantasia attendees lovingly recall that the Kentucky-raised writer/director/musician was one of the first major international guests to attend Fantasia for the fest’s third edition in 1998, when it launched the International Premiere of VAMPIRES. In conjunction with awarding him a Fantasia Lifetime Achievement Award, the festival will also present a masterclass from Carpenter, where he’ll discuss everything from his own festival origin story to his awe-inspiring career, touching on HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, STARMAN, THEY LIVE, and many more. In addition, the fest will explore his recent resurgence as a touring musician and play you his latest spine-tingling single!
A TRIBUTE TO JOSÉ MOJICA MARINS
On February 19th of this year, South American cinema lost its boldest visionary with the passing of José Mojica Marins, one of the most original and inspired voices in the history of genre film. A master of confrontational filmmaking who conquered numerous obstacles, Marins’ creations are radical lightning bolts of transgression made in defiance of Brazil’s then-dictatorship, whose collective glow will continue to influence and astonish generations to come. Fantasia had the honor of bringing Marins to the fest twice and of bestowing him with a Lifetime Achievement award. He will be greatly missed.
In recognition of Marins’ passing, Fantasia will be presenting three of his works — AT MIDNIGHT I’LL TAKE YOUR SOUL (1964), THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE (1968), and THE END OF MAN (1971).
In addition, the festival will also present a live talk with Brazilian filmmaker Dennison Ramalho (THE NIGHTSHIFTER), co-screenwriter of Mojica’s acclaimed 2008 Coffin Joe comeback film, EMBODIMENT OF EVIL. He will reminisce on his own history growing up inspired by the man, as well as his relationship with his friend and collaborator.
AN INDIGENOUS KIWI MARTIAL ARTS ACTION COMEDY CLOSES FANTASIA 2020
Fantasia’s 24th edition will slam into crescendo with the North American Premiere of NZ filmmaker Kiel McNaughton’s THE LEGEND OF BARON TO’A. Uli Latukefu (of Taika Waititi’s upcoming NEXT GOAL WINS) gives a charismatic turn in the leading role, supported by a talented Polynesian cast including THE MATRIX RELOADED’s Nathaniel Lees and ATTACK OF THE CLONES’ Jay Laga’aia. The film delivers comedy and pathos in a seamless blend of English and Tongan. While the hard-hitting fight choreography draws inspiration from pro wrestling and martial arts movies, it’s firmly grounded in its suburban setting, resulting in setpieces that celebrate the Pacific Island experience just as much as the script does. HUNTED TAKES SURVIVAL ACTION TO ITS MOST HUMAN PLACE

Both involved with moneylenders, one is an over-enthusiastic rising star in the MMA world; the other a resourceful, aspiring singer on-the-run who will stop at nothing for a spot on ‘Perfect Diva’! Following THREE (Fantasia 2016), master filmmaker Johnnie To is back with CHASING DREAM: an unexpected blend of mixed-martial-arts drama and high-stakes musical comedy, taking the viewers back to the madcap energy of his mid-2000s collaborations with Wai Ka-Fai and the themes of his sports-and-destiny masterpiece THROW DOWN. JORGE MICHEL GRAU RETURNS WITH THE BREATHLESS, STYLISH PERDIDA
A decade after his cannibalistic modern classic WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, Mexican filmmaker Jorge Michel Grau returns to Fantasia with PERDIDA. Starring José María de Tavira, Paulina Dávila, and Cristina Rodlo, Grau enters into the realm of Hitchcock and De Palma to deliver one of the best, most sustained thrillers of recent times. PLACE YOUR BETS ON ROM
Fourteen-year-old Rom (Tran Anh Khoa) is a runner. That is, he runs lottery numbers for the indebted inhabitants of a dilapidated tenement — a network of interconnected homes soon to be demolished by greedy developers. The bookie climbs and zips through its many alleys; down streets, up balconies, staircases, and across other unstable contraptions — in order to be the

LIFE TAKES YOU FOR A RIDE WITH MARYGOROUND

BEHOLD THE AMAZING, INSPIRING ART OF IVAN, THE TERRIRBLE
Relatively unknown outside Brazil, Ivan Cardoso (NOSFERATU IN BRAZIL, THE SECRET OF THE MUMMY) is one of the country’s most significant genre filmmakers. Throughout his decades-spanning career, Cardoso has blended radical aesthetics with lowbrow ambitions and pioneered a style of filmmaking called Terrir (a play on the word terror, and the Portuguese word for “to laugh”). Intercut with animation, interviews, and clips, Mario Abbade’s IVAN, THE TERRIRBLE is a crash course on Brazil’s best-kept genre secret and a fun homage for his biggest fans. While the country’s cinematic past and present are under threat with President Bolsonaro in power, this film emerges during a moment of national reflection on the importance of art and liberty under political oppression. FEELS GOOD, MAN FEELS PRETTY POWERFUL, MAN
A Sundance 2020 Special Jury Award Winner and standout of this year’s Berlinale, Arthur Jones’ FEELS GOOD, MAN is a playful and poignant documentary about illustrator Matt Furie’s infamous-but-once-innocent Pepe the Frog character. Stuart Gordon, who we lost earlier this year, is inextricably tied to Miskatonic. Not only by continuing the legacy of the fictional Miskatonic University in his iconoclastic Lovecraft adaptations, but by christening the very first branch of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies with a masterclass on the challenges of adapting “the unfilmable” H.P. Lovecraft for the screen. Two years later, Stuart’s Frontières project Purgatory was the very first project submission of the initiative, making him integral to the founding of not only Miskatonic, but Frontières as well. Here we bring together his closest collaborators from stage and screen to celebrate the life of this pioneering director who invigorated his community and never ceased to surprise and inspire.

This year South American cinema lost one of its boldest visionaries with the passing of José Mojica Marins. As part of our tribute to the departed artist, award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Dennison Ramalho, long-time friend and protégé of Marins, will give a profound live talk. He will reminisce on his own history, of growing up inspired by the great man’s work, and the evolution that came with the two meeting and developing both a friendship and creative relationship with the legendary director that endured through the years. The talk will close with a question period open to the virtual audience.
As the history and future of Brazil’s cinema is currently under threat in unconscionable ways, we feel it especially urgent to present a talk of this nature, both out of love for Mojica and in solidarity with Brazilian artists and the hardships they currently face.
