We’ve got it all. From monthly roundups, to curated top 5 lists, to reviews of our favorites available now… it’s here. We built it for you, so come and join us in the Field of Streams.
Netflix sure needs no introduction these days, so neither do we. Without further ado, here are five picks that recently joined the fray on the Big Red N.
JUPITER ASCENDING
In honor of this week’s Matrix news, you might want to get caught up on what the Wachowski’s have been up to since the last film, and Jupiter Ascending is as good a place to start as any. Is it as good as the Matrix? Umm, probably not, but worth a watch anyway. Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, and Eddie Redmayne in a galactic space drama? Sure, why not. (For the siblings’ best work since their iconic trilogy, check out Cloud Atlas instead. Then read the book, because author David Mitchell will be helping out with Matrix 4.)
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
In honor of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood [NOTE: Go see it while it’s still in theaters!] get you questionably historic Quentin Tarantino on with Inglorious Basterds. Brad Pitt isn’t as good as he is playing Cliff Booth, but he’s still pretty compelling. With its Quentin-ssential long takes and dense dialogue, these bastards won’t get you down.
Jackie Brown, Pulp Fiction, and The Hateful Eight are also currently streaming on Netflix. Why not make it a weekend?
ROCKY
It’s not just the 1976 class Rocky that’s available now on Netflix but the entire pentalogy (quintet?) for your viewing pleasure. I and II are a great prep for this century’s Rocky Balboa and the Creed movies, while the rest are just off the wall fun. Take your pick from the hard-scrabble streets of Philly to Mr. T and Ivan Drago. It’s all good.
SHORT TERM 12
Following Captain Marvel, Brie Larson might be a household name, but to get glimpse into her more humble beginnings, check out Short Term 12, the story of a foster-care counselor dealing with teens in tumult. The cast beyond Larson is phenomenal as well: Rami Malek, Lakeith Stanfield, Melora Walters, and the under-appreciated John Gallagher Jr.
JACK OF ALL TRADES
Once upon a time, baseball cards were as much an American pastime as the sport. But then scandal rocked the multi-million-dollar industry for good.
So reads the teaser for this documentary on the failed collector card industry. This one’s on my list. Back in H.W. Bush administration, I was one of those kids who collected baseball cards on the promise and excitement of making a tidy profit of these colorful items. By the time Clinton took office, it had all fallen apart. I want to find out why.
There are countless services to explore and great things to watch on all of them. Which ones did we miss that you would suggest to us? And, as always, if you’ve got thoughts on titles we’re missing out on or new services to check out, leave a comment below or email us.
