Call to Action — Guillermo del Toro Gauging Interest in HELLBOY III

Hellboy III seems like a far off dream for fans of Mike Mignola’s renegade good-guy demon, but occasionally we get murmurs of hope that the project isn’t dead. Hellboy actor Ron Perlman has often expressed his enthusiasm for completing the saga as a gift to its fans, but today it’s director Guillermo del Toro lighting a torch for the long-awaited sequel.

At first glance, the second tweet might feel misplaced in the conversation, but this has become a race against time to enjoy our fictional hellish, orange-tinted apocalypse before living through the real one.

The franchise has been dormant since 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a somewhat speculative gamble that rode the success of del Toro’s Academy Award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth. The sequel was profitable and well-received by fans and critics, but del Toro encountered setbacks in his attachment to the oft-delayed The Hobbit, and trouble getting Lovecraft adaptation At The Mountains Of Madness off the ground.

Del Toro is one of my favorite directors and I recently rewatched both Hellboy movies for the first time in a long while. They hold up marvelously, and I’m excited for any possibility of the continuation of the franchise. Comic book movies have come a long way in the public consciousness since 2008, Perlman has expanded his fan base with Sons Of Anarchy, and Hellboy comics have been nothing short of amazing. A new Hellboy movie could very well be a hit.

Update:
Well over 130,000 votes were placed in the poll, and del Toro has promised to see if he can get the discussion moving again. Thanks to everyone who showed their support for Hellboy III!
