Subplot is Substance. Believe in the Magic of TED LASSO and The Richmond Way, Now on 4K UHD – Review & Unboxing!!

With its gentle wit, cast of eccentric supporting characters, and rustic charm of its lead, Ted Lasso proved an early critical hit for Apple in 2020, landing within a year of the debut of their Apple TV+ streaming service.

With a fourth season looming to reboot the series in 2026, the original Richmond trilogy of Seasons 1-3 makes yet another impressive leap: a physical upgrade onto 4K UHD Blu-ray disc, bringing the streaming hit to its most pristine and complete version of itself.

The series begins centered on the character of American football coach Ted Lasso, who like actor Jason Sudeikis (and this author), is a Kansas City boy through and through. In a bizarre stunt move by a UK soccer team, Lasso is hired to coach Richmond Football Club, despite having no experience with the sport. The unorthodox hiring is is the brainchild of owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), who wrested control of the team from her philandering ex-husband, and is determined to drive it into the ground out of spite, destroying that which he loves most.

Hung to dry by the management, disrespected by the team, and resented by the fans, Ted – along with his coaching partner and closest friend, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) – finds himself in an incredibly hostile environment, but approaches it with positivity and a plucky midwestern attitude, defying expectations and slowly breaking down the walls with the other characters in his orbit, including grumpy veteran star and Team Captain Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein, who is also a writer on the show), brash hotshot superstar and Kent’s nemesis Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster), and shy locker room attendant Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed).

It’s a huge rush to watch Ted slowly win over his critics just by being genuine and caring, meeting hatred with compassion and keeping a positive attitude, with the creed: “Believe”. There’s a genuine joy to watching Ted turning foes to friends, critics to allies, and haters to fans.

And the show strikes such a unique balance: it’s a hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy, a stirring human drama, and a thrilling sports spectacle.

But the series goes on into its second and third seasons, some important developments change the landscape of the show. The first is that once we’ve fallen in love with Ted, his armor starts to get stripped away, revealing that, yes, he’s a good dude, but not perfect, and dealing with a lot of suppressed pain. He’s not just someone who always gives love, but someone who needs to feel loved as well.

But where the series really excels is in pulling you into this world, and increasingly the show becomes less about Ted and more about an expanding cast of wonderful characters; not only the many members of the team but the front office, fans, and other people who get drawn into the increasingly special environment that’s created at Richmond FC. Characters carry on their own relationships, rivalries, romances, bromances, sisterhoods, love triangles, struggles, and stories without Ted at the center of them. And you realize that you’ve become intimately familiar not only with Ted and his plight, but with everyone around him as well. The subplots have become the substance, and it’s pretty incredible.

Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve probably seen the show, in which case you may have encountered the phenomenon of its incredible replayability. You might catch a clip shared on social media and suddenly feel the need to go down a rabbit hole of other favorite clips, or simply get the hankering to rewatch the series because it’s just. That. Enjoyable.

And to me, that’s the kind of show that deserves the investment of owning.
